Stranded at the Altar: Romantic Love Versus God’s Love
It’s tough to beat a good romantic comedy. My husband and I hit the theater last weekend and met up with friends to see Solo Mio. It’s about a wedding disaster that leaves a groom stranded at the altar in the magnificent city of Rome.
I was reminded of how difficult romantic love is versus God’s love.
The groom’s ruined marriage and honeymoon become an adventure he never expected. Isn’t that often how life goes? The hardest situations can eventually become an unexpected journey of beautiful turns.
Sometimes heartbreak is just the first chapter of a better story.
God is the author of our story, and while it may not play out like a rom-com or read like a tantalizing romance novel, the love he has for us trumps any devastating life event we may face.
“Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you.” Psalm 63:3.
How is it possible that God’s love is better than life itself? It’s an enormous statement to wrap our heads around.
And yet, we learn throughout scripture that God’s love is incomparable to what we’ve experienced from people who have said they loved us.
His love is in a sphere all by itself and his love never leaves us stranded.
God’s love is compassionate. “The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love.” Psalm 103:8
God’s love is faithful. The Lord is righteous in all his ways and faithful in all he does.” Psalm 145:17
God’s love is forgiving and full of grace. “Even when God’s people refused to obey, you are God, ready to pardon, gracious and merciful, slow to anger, abundant in kindness, and did not forsake them.” Nehemiah 9:17
God’s love is gentle. “Then Jesus said, ‘Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.’” Matthew 11:28,29
God’s love is unfathomable. “And I pray that you may have power to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge.” Ephesians 3:18,19
God’s love is eternal. “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.” Psalm 107:1
God’s love is sacrificial. “This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.” 1 John 4:10.
God’s love is inseparable from us. “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:38,39.
I think the Psalmist knew what he was talking about when he said that God’s love is better than life itself!
This kind of love is like no other.
It can’t be packaged in a heart-shaped box, and a romantic comedy offers thin hope for a love that compares to this.
Even in our darkest days and rock-bottom moments, God’s love is with us.
Even in our heartbreaks and headaches, he is writing our story, and it’s a good one.
Even if we’re left standing at the altar, mortified and terrified for our future, he’s got our next chapter figured out.
And friend, here’s a spoiler alert…his love guarantees a happy ending.

I'm so glad you're here!
There is abundant, joy-filled life available to us through Jesus! The world is dark but there is always hope in the bright light of Him. Prayer is powerful.
Love,
Kimberly
Couldn’t help but think of Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s “How Do I Love Thee”… thanks for reminding us of the perfect adjectives that describe God’s love for us— and the wonderful scripture verses that support them! (Oh, and I really want to see this movie 🙂
I had to look her up! Thanks for sharing that, and thank you for your encouraging words. Also, you must see the movie! Very entertaining:)
