The Heart of Worship

What draws you into a heart of worship? For me, it’s time in His word and prayer, first and foremost. But worshipping Him through praise music also has a beautiful way of turning my gaze to Him and settling my soul to align with His.

We can be distracted by so many things, but reminding ourselves to worship God by praising Him helps us to reorient our thinking.

Colossians 3:2 says, “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” And that can include music.

I marvel at the way Christian artists and composers put lyrics to music that so clearly articulate:

* the heart of God.

* the immeasurable love He has for us.

* the things we struggle with and the fears we face.

* the miracle-working power of God.

Worship music can transform our hearts and minds by stringing words and music together from the heart of God that resonates with us. I stand in awe of the talent that God has given to these artists to relay His message through song.

A great worship song can change my mood and mindset and minister to my needs.

My walks and workouts are a time of worship too as I listen to faith-building, God-glorifying lyrics.  I’m strengthened spiritually and physically.

The enemy flees when we praise God.

King David knew this and often was so engaged in worshipping God that nothing else mattered to him. He didn’t apologize for his passion (even when his wife Michal disapproved of his behavior) and in Psalm 63 he claims, “Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you, I will praise you as long as I live and in your name I will lift up my hands.”

It doesn’t matter that I can’t carry a tune or my singing voice is flat and off-key. Praising our King is God-honoring and edifying to our souls. And that friend, is the heart of worship.
